Ashura 2015: Millions of Shia Muslims gather in Karbala

Today, the 24th of Oct., was the day of Ashura. Millions of Shia Muslims across the globe gathered in Karbala to commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of  the holy prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Imam Hussain (PBUH) and all his companions.

Muslims worldwide hold mourning rituals during the month of Muharram on the lunar calendar in remembrance of the suffering imposed on the religious icon, his family and his companions, by the tyrant of the time Yazid, an Umayyad caliph, back in the seventh century.
