Ashura | Why do we cry for Imam Hussain in Imam Khomeini’s view?
Imam Hussain was the prophet Muhammad’s grandson who refused to pay allegiance to the tyrant of his time thus he along with his few followers were all brutally killed on the day of Ashura at the battlefield of Karbala about 14 centuries ago but every year, Muslim people around the world participate in the mourning ceremonies and processions to commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussain.
Why they have been weeping for Imam Hussain for centuries?! Why the holy prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and other Shia Imams were crying for Imam Hussain and why they have also recommend us to cry for him (PBUH)?
Imam Khomeini , the founder of Islamic republic of Iran has stated the reason of weeping for Imam Hussain (PBUH) in his speech. The following image includes a part of Imam Khomeini’s speech in the year 1969 (several years before the victory of Islamic revolution).
Imam Khomeini stated in his speech:
“…Now, a group has appeared demanding that: “Do not commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (PBUH) and other Infallible Shia Imams.” They do not know the outcome and consequences of this mourning and lamentation. They do not realize that it is the uprising of Imam Hussain (PBUH) against tyranny that has been conserved up to this time and has set off this movement [Islamic revolution]. This movement is a ray, a reflection of Imam Hussain’s uprising. They do not know that weeping for Imam Hussain (PBUH) means perpetuation of his uprising and maintaining the fact that even a small number could stand up against a great empire. This is the Imam Hussain’s instruction. This is an instruction for all people that: “Every day is an Ashura and each territory is Karbala!” This instruction implies that Imam Hussain’s movement must be kept alive and active everywhere and at all times.
Imam Hussain (PBUH) with his few men scarified himself for Islam. He stood up and said: “No!” to a great empire ; and his “No” must be conserved daily and at everywhere; and these mourning sessions are also held for the perpetuation of the same “No”.
Our children and youth should not consider this matter as a matter of “weeping nation”. The “weeping nation” has been induced by others to you. They (the enemies of Islam) afraid of such weeping because it is a cry in support of the oppressed. It is an outcry in opposition to the tyrants. These organized processions and rituals are against the cruelty and injustice, They have rose up. You must keep these rituals alive. These are the religious signs which must be kept alive, These are the political signs which must be conserved…”

Quote for Muharram by Imam Reza (2)

People around the world have been prepared for the mourning ceremonies since several days ago and now all over the cities are covered in black. The smell of Muharram has been propagated through the air and our hearts are started to be burned again for Imam Hussain’s martyrdom.
Tonight is the first night of mourning for the martyrdom of the prophet Muhammad’s grandson , Imam Hussain, in Shia believes as Imam Reza (PBUH) has stated:
“No one could have seen my father’s smile when the month of Muharram came. Sadness was increasing in his face day by day till the tenth of Muharram [day of Ashura] and when the tenth day of Muharram would dawn, it would be a day of grief and weeping for him.” – Imam Reza (PBUH)

When is Ashura 2017?
Ashura 2017 is on Sunday, the 1st of October (1/10/2017).
“Ashura” (/ʌʃuːrʌ /) means “tenth” in Arabic language and the day of Ashura is the 10th day of Muharram(/Mohærræm/), the first month in the Islamic calendar but each year, the day of Ashura falls in a different day in the Georgian calendar as the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar and the Georgian calendar is a solar one.
Day of Ashura was the day in which Imam Husayn, and all 72 of his companions were violently killed and beheaded one by one and all their women and children were captured.
Imam Hussain was the prophet Muhammad’s grandson and the third Shia Imam who prophet Muhammad had stated about him:
“Hussain is from me and I’m from Hussain”
but he was murdered in fifty years following the prophet Muhammad by the people who called themselves Muslim!
Imam Hussain was surrounded by an Army of 30,000 at the land of Karbala on his way to Kufah in the year 61 Hijri (about 680 AD). Paying allegiance to Yazid was the only way for Imam Hussain to survive but Yazid did not believe in prophetess and revelation as he said it openly and his behaviors were against the Islamic rules. Thus there was no way for Imam Hussain except to sacrifice what they had to save Islam from utter distortion and destruction.
Day of Ashura : Christian people in the holy shrine of Imam Husayn
Day of Ashura is a day Imam Husayn and all 72 of his companions were killed to revive the religion of God from utter distortion, therefor people who believe in the unique God and have different religions across the world mark the day of Ashura in every year.
