Every year, millions of people from different countries flock to the city of Karbala for the pilgrimage of the holy shrine of Imam Hussain (PBUH), the prophet Muhammad’s grandson on the day of Arbaeen. Even non-Muslim people take part in this massive march.
Lots of these people prefer to walk more than 80 kilometers from Najaf toward Karbala for the pilgrimage. This happens not only because of their true love toward Imam Hussain, but also because this is a best way to introduce Imam Hussain to the world; a way to show their preparation for the arrival of Imam Mahdi, the last savior of man from descendant of Imam Hussain.
If you decide to take part in this journey of love, you should know that you do not need to worry about drink, food or even accommodation during this journey. One backpack is enough to start as the hospitality of Iraqian people toward the pilgrims of Imam Hussain (PBUH) on the way toward Karbala is amazing and makes you to experience a new different social life style on Arbaeen.
The text in the above image is taken from a quote by Imam Sadigh (PBUH) :
قال الصادق ع: مَنْ أَتَى قَبْرَ الْحُسَیْنِ ع مَاشِیاً کَتَبَ اللَّهُ لَهُ بِکُلِّ خُطْوَةٍ أَلْفَ حَسَنَةٍ وَ مَحَا عَنْهُ أَلْفَ سَیِّئَةٍ وَ رَفَعَ لَهُ أَلْفَ دَرَجَةٍ
Whoever walks for the pilgrimage of Imam Hussain (PBUH), God will record 1000 awards for his/her every step and will wipe out his/her 1000 sins and will give him/her higher ranking number [in the heaven] by 1000

Day of Ashura | The day heavenly angels wept for Hussain
The story of Imam Hussain (PBUH) on the day of Ashura in Karbala has a heat that still burn our hearts over centuries. Day of Ashura was a day in which even the heavenly angles wept for Hussain (PBUH), the prophet Muhammad’s grandson.
Imam Mahdi, the 12th Shia Imam and the grandson of Imam Hussain (PBUH) has said in “Ziarat Nahiya” that not only the heavenly angles but the skies, the mountains, the oceans and even the fishes wept for Imam Hussain:
“…Mourning commemorations were held for you [O’ Hussain!] in the utmost exalted place Heaven,
and the dark-eyed Maidens [of Paradise] hit their own heads and faces in grief,
The skies and their inhabitants wept,
as did Paradise and its keepers,
The mountains and their surroundings,
The oceans and their fishes,
The heavens and their servants
The Ka’ba, and the Station (of Abraham),
The sacred Monument,
and Mecca and its sanctuary …” (Read the full Ziarat Nahiya at here).
I do not know how these can be happen but I know that there is a verse in the holy Quran saying all the creatures exalt God but you can not understand:
“The seven heavens and the earth and whatever is in them exalt Him. And there is not a thing except that it exalts [ Allah ] by His praise, but you do not understand their [way of] exalting. Indeed, He is ever Forbearing and Forgiving.” [The holy Quran, 17:44]

Day of Ashura 2016 in Iran
Ashura 2016 in Iran is commemorated by Shiite Muslim people in Iran and other countries.

They all were violently killed on the day of Ashura at Karbala and their women and children were all captured but they revived Islam by their blood till now.

Why did Ashura happen? The three causes of Imam Hussain revolution
In the previous post, I made an image about why Imam Hussain (PBUH) rose up as stated in his will, but that was not the only reason for Imam Hussain to revolt.
The holy shrine of Imam Hussain (PBUH) in Karbala, Iraq. A photo taken in Muharram 2016
There are three main causes explained in Martyr Mortaza Motahhari’s book written according to the Islamic quotes for why Imam Hussain rose up against Yazid’s government and why Ashura happened.
1-Imam Hussain rejected to pledge allegiance to the immoral and non-Muslim man such as Yazid who wanted to be a ruler of Muslim community despite the threatens made by Yazid’s government because swearing allegiance to Yazid indicated not only accepting Yazid as a ruler but also accepting the wrong way of succession determination was being established for the first time by Yazid’s father in the Muslim community. The thing that was not permitted in Islam and both Shia and Sunni sects.
2-About 100,000 people of Kufa sent 18,000 letters to Imam Hussain and invited him to come to Iraq and re-establish an Islamic government, although they forgot their invitation and leave Imam Hussain to be alone against the 30,000 people of Yazid’s Army and even they helped the Army! This invitation cause Imam to have no choice other than to accept their request
3- Reforming the Muslim community and promoting virtue and preventing vice was the third and the main reason for Ashura uprising. Imam Hussain had found about his cousin, Moslem (the son of Aghil), martyrdom on the way to Kufa, therefor Imam could have refused the invitation sent by the people of Kufa and come back to Mecca, but he did not stop going to Kufa until Yazid’s Army stop him and his companions in a land called Karbala. Imam Hussain himslef stated this main reason openly in his will to his brother before traveling to Kufa. You can see a part of Imam Hussain will in the following image:
“I did not rise up for the cause of wickedness, amusement, corruption or oppression, but I rose up to reform the Muslim community of my grandfather [Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)]. I want to promote virtue and prevent vice.”

-Read more explanation in this book (The Truth Hussain’s (A.S) Revolt) which I found on the internet and It is an English translation and abstract of the original book written by martyar Mortaza Mutahhari, an Islamic philosopher who Imam Khomeini invited all the people to read his books.
Accept Apologies Like Imam Hussain – Imam Hussain Quote 2
“If someone vilifies me in my right ear and then apologizes for it in my left ear, I will surely accept his apology because I heard Imam Ali (PBUH) narrate a saying from my grandfather, the Prophet of God, that
The one who does not accept apologies, whether the apology is true or not, will not pass the pond of al-Kawthar.”

Shi’ite Muslims Donate Blood on Ashura + Photos
In Islam, saving human life and helping others against affliction are always enjoined. In the holy #Quran God says, “Whosoever saves a human life, saves the life of the whole mankind” [5: 32].
The holy prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Imam Hussain (pbuh), is the one who gave his life to save the whole mankind. He saved Islam by his blood. He revive Islam, the last version of the religion sent by God to save the humanity.
Thus every year, Shi’ite Muslims across the globe donate blood on the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussain(PBUH) and all 72 of his companions on the day of Ashura.

More than 10 million people in Karbala for Ashura 2014
According to the news, despite all threats made by ISIL terrorists, more than 10 million pilgrims gathered in the holy city of Karbala to mark the day of Ashura in the year 2014.
Every year millions of mourners and lovers of Imam Husayn across the globe flock to Karbala, a city in Iraq where the holy shrines of Imam Husayn and his companions are located, to commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of the prophet Muhammad’s grandson on the day of Ashura.
Ashura is the 10th day of Muharram, the 1st month in the Islamic calender. Imam Husayn who was the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), along with all 72 of his companions were martyred on this day in the battle of Karbala in 680 AD.
On the day of Ashura, shops and businesses were closed as mourners began pouring onto the streets since dawn but free food and drinks offer to mourners and pilgrims in the streets and mosques by some other people for the love of Imam Husayn (PBUH). Some people distribute foods which is called Nazri food, among their neighbors home by home thus you usually do not need to prepare your own food on the day of Ashura and Tasua, the 9th day of Muharram.
In the year 2015, The day of Ashura will fall on Saturday, the 24th Oct. and many pilgrims are preparing yourselves to arrive at Karbala for this day.
Husayn was martyred on Ashura day while he was thirsty
Drinking water is universally held to be one of the most basic of human rights and is vital to the survival of any living creatures, but Imam Husayn, the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, was martyred along with all his companions on the day of Ashura in Karbala while they were all thirsty. The tents of his family were pitched just a walking distance from the banks of the river Euphrates and yet he and his camp – including his six month old baby – were not allowed a single drop.
Access to water had been closed for three days and nights, but during this time, Hadrat Abbas, the brother of Imam Husayn, was able to get some water for children on one or two occasions, including the night of Ashura and That’s why Abbas had been received the nick name of Saqqa which means “water carrier”.
On the day of Ashura, Hadrat Abbas went to get some water again. The number of men who guarded the river bank was four thousand. Read More…
Shia Muslims do not practice self-flagellation on Ashura
Despite what you see in the Google image when you search the word of “Ashura”, Any self-mutilation such as self-flagellation with knives, chains or razors even walking on fire is definitely not allowed in Islam, but It seems this is the media policy showing Shia Muslims as violent as they can!
Ritual self-flagellation is forbidden by Shia clerics such as Grand Ayatullah Khamenei who is the leader of Islamic Republic of Iran:
“blood matam (Self-flagellation) is a part of the culture that was made up. It is an issue that has no relation to religion and, without doubt, Allah is not happy with it. Read More…
