When is Ashura 2017?
Ashura 2017 is on Sunday, the 1st of October (1/10/2017).
“Ashura” (/ʌʃuːrʌ /) means “tenth” in Arabic language and the day of Ashura is the 10th day of Muharram(/Mohærræm/), the first month in the Islamic calendar but each year, the day of Ashura falls in a different day in the Georgian calendar as the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar and the Georgian calendar is a solar one.
Day of Ashura was the day in which Imam Husayn, and all 72 of his companions were violently killed and beheaded one by one and all their women and children were captured.
Imam Hussain was the prophet Muhammad’s grandson and the third Shia Imam who prophet Muhammad had stated about him:
“Hussain is from me and I’m from Hussain”
but he was murdered in fifty years following the prophet Muhammad by the people who called themselves Muslim!
Imam Hussain was surrounded by an Army of 30,000 at the land of Karbala on his way to Kufah in the year 61 Hijri (about 680 AD). Paying allegiance to Yazid was the only way for Imam Hussain to survive but Yazid did not believe in prophetess and revelation as he said it openly and his behaviors were against the Islamic rules. Thus there was no way for Imam Hussain except to sacrifice what they had to save Islam from utter distortion and destruction.
Ashura and the first lesson from Imam Hussain
Happy birthday of Imam Hussain to the Imam of our time, Imam Mahdi, and to all the believers.
In this post , I’d like to translate a part of an speech made by a great philosopher and scholar, Ayatullah Mohammad Taqi Mesbah Yazdi who is fortunately alive and lives in the city of Qom in Iran. I read the text of that speech in his official website in the recent days and I found it inspiring. It was about the first lesson from the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (PBUH) in some parts
The first lesson from the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (PBUH) is that we should not concern ourselves about the future consequences, if we work to the glory of God. The good results will be achieved surely even if the present results do not seem pleasant; it may be achieved in the future years and the society will be benefited from.
Ayatullah Mesbah Yazdi said that Imam Hussain was satisfied with what he did although he gave everything he had because he worked to the glory of God and provided the long-lasting conditions for the Islamic society to be reformed…
