The first month in the Islamic calendar is Muharram and the tenth day of Muharram is called Ashura (/ʌʃuːrʌ /). Islamic calendar is based on the lunar cycle.Therefore, each year the day of Ashura falls in a different day in the Georgian calendar.
When is Ashura 2018?
Day of Ashura in the year 2018 in Iraq and Iran will fall on Thursday, the 20th of September (20/09/2018) and it means there are only 10 days left to the month of Muharram and 20 days to the day of Ashura in 2018.
What is Ashura?
Day of Ashura was a day in which a man along with his small group of companions were all violently killed and beheaded in front of his families at the land of Karbala but they refused to pay allegiance to the tyrant of the time. They fought till the last drops of their blood while they were thirsty and the water of the river Forat had been banned for them by the enemies for three days.
Following their killing, their tents were burnt, the jewelleris of their girls and women were cruelly plundered and all their women and children were captured and moved from Karbala toward the Levant on foots with no food and drink.
That man was Imam Hussain, the holy prophet Muhammad’s grandson and the third Shia Imam. The one who the prophet Muhammad (PBUH) had said about him:
حسين مني وأنا من حسين أحب الله من أحب حسينا
Hussain is from me and I am from Hussain. God loves who loves Hussain.
The prophet Muhammad (PBUH) had also said about the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (PBUH):
إنّ لِقَتلِ الحُسينِ حَرارَةً في قُلوبِ المُؤمِنينَ لاتَبرُدُ اَبَداً
“Surely , there exists in the hearts of the believers, with respect to the martyrdom of Hussain, a heat that never subsides.”

Day of Ashura has always been the day of grief and sorrow for the believers. Each year, Shia Muslim people and other Imam Hussain’s lovers from different religions participate in the mourning ceremonies and processions to commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussain (PBUH) and his companions.
Shia Muslim people do not fast on the day of Ashura but they distribute a great amount of food and drink among Imam Hussain’s mourners on this day and the first ten days of Muharram.
